Mastering Reactivity: Practical Skills for You and Your Dog

  • Build Skills.

Reactivity training requires structure and consistency. In the first phase, we’ll build a strong foundation — engagement games, marker cues, and recovery strategies — so you and your dog have the tools to succeed.

  • Safe Exposure.

Using Mellow Hound’s private 2-acre property, we’ll set up controlled, safe exposures to your dog’s triggers. This step gives your dog a chance to learn better skills around triggers without the overwhelm of busy public environments.

  • Grow Confidence.

As your and your dog develop confidence, we’ll gradually reduce distance and add more movement, working toward calm walking, passing setups, and neutral responses to common triggers.

  • Take It Into the Real World.

Finally, we’ll begin transferring skills into carefully chosen real-world settings. You’ll gain the confidence to navigate daily life with your dog, knowing how to manage challenges and guide them successfully.

Is This Program Right For My Dog?

Use this quick guide to decide if the 8-week Reactivity Program is the right fit.

Good Fit

  • Barking/lunging at dogs, people, or moving stimuli
  • Guardian can commit to 2 sessions/week for 8 weeks
  • Okay working first on private property before public spaces
  • Willing to practice short homework sessions between visits
  • Dog is safe to handle on leash (no bite history)

Not a Fit (Right Now)

  • Active bite history toward people/dogs requiring medical attention
  • Severe aggression or safety risks beyond an on-leash setting
  • Schedule can’t support weekly sessions or homework
  • Primary goal is off-leash dog parks or busy events immediately

If any of these points raise questions or if your dog’s needs fall outside this program, I’ll discuss alternatives or refer you to appropriate resources. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you’re unsure — we can talk it through together..

FAQ — Common Questions

Why is the program 8 weeks long?

Consistency is key. Meeting 1–2 times per week keeps momentum and reduces setbacks. This structure helps your dog progress safely without big gaps between exposures.

Can we start in public spaces right away?

No — jumping into busy areas too early often makes reactivity worse. We start on private property with controlled exposures, then carefully transition to quieter real-world settings when your dog is ready.

What if my dog reacts during a session?

That’s expected — reactivity training is about practicing recovery and creating new associations. I’ll guide you step by step so reactions become learning opportunities, not setbacks.
